Campsite Europe, in Uppsala

Ever since the sun came out during Välborg; the Swedish celebration of the spring at the 31st of April, Uppsala turned into a beautiful green European campsite. Happy Swedes and internationals walking on the streets forgiving the dark and cold winter, summer clothes as soon the temperature reaching 15 degrees Celsius and a good reason to drink not inside but outside!

Also the BBQ’s are burning and daily you find another facebook BBQ event. Unfortunately last two weeks the BBQ’s had a more sad atmosphere. The last weeks of the Erasmus term started and that meanted: goodbye BBQ’s with all your lovely international friends you made here. One by one they were leaving and it was just sad! Especially on the last moment at the train station doing your final wave. It definitely affected my concentration writing my demanding thesis.

Although more people leave there is a new theme on campsite Europe which brings the international students left together. It’s the EURO 2008 football championship in Austria and Switserland. While you more nicely and open as bunch of Europeans or world citizens together here, the football definitely affects the national feelings. Off course my French roommate thinks France is winning the poule, but as a Dutch I am certain we defeat France! Right! Also the Swedes have their dream to still win the game. Deep in their heart according to my Swedish roommate they think about ones the 3th place in 1994. Perhaps they can even make it to this position in the championship or even better. Well at least with at Eurovision song contest they performed better than the Netherlands, so why would it not be the case with football.

Unfortunately I won’t be able the coming two weeks to enjoy EURO 2008 at campsite Europe in Uppsala. In a couple of hours I will fly back again to the Netherlands to present my final MSc thesis in Wageningen this week. After working intensively on this project it finally comes to an end. Also the end of my MSc studies will be near as only an internship is left. Where this will occur is still a surprise, but keep you posted as soon as I know more.
